The greatest oak was once a little nut who stood its ground.
We are TWO!! Can you believe it? When searching for a quote to title this celebratory edition of our e-newsletter, the words above nearly jumped off the screen at me. The line is attributed to "Anonymous" (such a prolific utterer of the pithy platitude, that Anonymous fellow), but it could just as easily have been said by any of us involved in the birth of Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley. It wasn't always easy. In fact, there were formative moments when the whole idea seemed ludicrous and impossible! Every confident step forward was hard-earned, having been run through the gauntlet of the illogical, doubt nipping at its heels. Still, we persevered. We stood our ground. Before we knew it, this nutty little enterprise began to take root. Today, we stand tall and proud - not quite a might oak yet, but reaching for the sun, growing stronger and more grounded with every passing day. For all the dreams we had about what FIAGKV could ultimately be, I think it's safe to say we're all a little pleasantly surprised at how quickly we have grown to our current status and how seamlessly we have been able to integrate our program into the community. Part of that is helped by the fact that we do not see ourselves as competitors with other programs - far from it. We exist to complement those services, helping to fill the gaps that exist so that a broader segment of the population can have access to the help they so desperately need and deserve. We identified a problem and provided a solution and we aren't finished yet. Since incorporating in May of 2014, training our first volunteers in August of 2014, and serving our first care receiver on October 6, 2014, we've accomplished a lot. Did you know that in a year and a half of active service, FIAGKV...
has taken on 327 care receivers?
has trained 117 volunteers, 67 of whom are fully on-boarded?
fulfilled 1,790 service requests?
donated 2,640 volunteer hours?
put 17,269 miles on Jennifer's vehicle?
Pretty incredible, right? That ever-wise one "Anonymous" also once said, "Time has a wonderful way of showing us what really matters." There are days it seems we've been at this for 20 years. And there are other days it seems we've been at it for 20 minutes. But the important thing is, we're here right now. We're sharing our story and building our base of volunteers. We're stepping in to serve the generation of amazing people who came before us, paving the way. We're making connections, neighbor to neighbor. We are making a difference. Thank you for being part of it. Whether you donated funds, attended a presentation, signed up to volunteer, sponsored us,enjoyed an event we hosted, or even just told a friend about our program...YOU have a stake in this. Happy 2nd birthday to us! Here's to many more to come.
