I'm the one who is blessed.

One of the best things about volunteering with Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley is the variety of opportunities to serve. There is, quite literally, something for everyone.

Transportation is far and away our biggest need, of course. But what if you don't like to drive?

Never fear. We've got jobs for you. Just ask Patty Adkins.

Patty originally contacted us to apply for services as a care receiver. She had just had surgery and was the full-time caregiver for her husband. But soon enough, she was driving again and felt she could handle things. It was then she noticed a line on the form asking if she'd be interested in volunteering.

She reached out to learn more, and Jennifer suggested she try her hand at making reassurance calls.

"Jennifer asked if I liked talking on the phone, and I said yes. It's one of my favorite past times," Patty says. "She connected me with three ladies, all of whom just wanted someone to talk to, someone who would listen to them. It was such an easy way to let them know someone cares about them."

That was nearly three years ago. Today, Patty has a full roster of six women she stays connected with via regular phone calls. She calls them her "special ladies." And each of them feels special with Patty. They know she cares, and they adore her in return.

"I have made such good friends with these ladies....they call me also, because I have let them know if they need to talk I'm here to listen. I send cards, make friendly visits , transport (sometimes), and run errands. I spend about 30-35 hours a month doing what I love....reaching out and making a small difference in the lives of my special ladies."

Patty encourages others to volunteer, too. "I really feel I'm the one who is blessed to have found this outreach through Faith in Action. Whatever talents you have to offer, there is someone out there needing you. Faith in Action can help connect with them."
