What is Sweet Charity?
Sweet Charity is a light-hearted, friendly dessert competition, pitting area confectioners and chefs against one another as they vie for top honors. Our panel of Celebrity Judges will select winners in three categories: Presentation, Creativity, and Taste.
Every ticket holder gets to have their say, as well, and one entrant will win the sure-to-be-coveted People's Choice award. During the evening, we'll have live music, door prize opportunities, lots of laughter, and maybe a surprise or two!
Artist Ian Bode
Artist Ian Bode will be onsite creating a unique commemorative work of art during Sweet Charity! Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase the finished painting via auction. We will also take a limited number of pre-orders for prints of the final piece!
Rock City Cake Company
Our next entrant is coming back for their third year as a Sweet Charity competitor and enter the arena as defending People's Choice Award recipients.
Morgan Morrison and Cortney Marsh started Rock City Cake Company in Logan, where they spent three years honing their craft and serving up amazing cakes and other treats to a loyal clientele. Since making the move to Charleston, their Capitol Street shop has become a downtown fixture.
We have no doubt this team will come prepared to rock you!
Chef Holly McAllister
One of my favorite things about Sweet Charity is discovering brand new competitors to introduce every year.
This year, we're excited to introduce you to Chef Holly McCallister.
If you are an area foodie, you may know Holly from her work as professional chef. She is currently employed at Bricks & Barrels in Charleston. Her skill in creating specialty dishes is just one of the many ways she proves to be a true asset in their kitchen. We can't wait to see what she cooks up for us!
Delights by Davis
We are truly honored to introduce our next entrant, Zach Davis, the talent behind Delights By Davis.
Zach is an original in more way than one, but for the purposes of this introduction, he is an original Sweet Charity entrant, dating back to our very first event in 2015. Zach brings his A game each and every time. His presentations have ranged from elegant to whimsical. His desserts are a crowd favorite year on year. And his creativity knows no bounds! He's a triple threat in this competition.
Thrilled to welcome first time entrant, Cafe Appalachia, to Sweet Charity!
In addition to serving up homemade, farm-to-table deliciousness for lunch every day and to their catering customers, the Cafe also serves as a training program for women coming out of long-term treatment for Substance Abuse Disorder.
At the Cafe, they serve a higher purpose with every meal. We like it!
So excited to announce that Mea Cuppa will be back this year, serving up coffee deliciousness to go with the sweet treats you'll be sampling throughout the evening. Coffee & dessert go together like...milk & cookies! :-)
We count ourselves lucky to be featuring Chef Jenny Reese and her Edgewood Summit team for their third consecutive year.
But last year? Well, last year these guys BROUGHT IT. Their Alice in Wonderland tea party theme was the talk of the room, and the assortment of confections they served up were melt in your mouth delectable. So much so, they are the defending Taste Award winners!
Ms. Groovy's Kitchen & Catering
Help us welcome back another multi-year entrant - Ms. Groovy's Kitchen: Gourmet Catering!
These guys always bring something unique and special to the competition. Like warm, delectable bread pudding. Or their own twist on pineapple upside cake. Oh, my! So delectable!
We're looking forward to seeing what groovalicious sweetness they cook up this year!
Sugar Momma Sweets
We've announced our 4 celebrity judges, now onto our exciting list of 2019 competitors! And first up we have Jordan Dotson from Sugar Momma Sweets!
Jordan is no stranger to Sweet Charity, having taken home awards for her creativity the past two years she has participated. This talented icing artist does amazing things with her sugar cookie canvasses and we can't wait to see what she creates this year!
We do! Thanks to the generosity of our friends at United Dairy in Charleston!
Our fourth and final Celebrity Judge...say hello to former WVU star and current WVSU Running Backs coach, Quincy Wilson! We are thrilled he's agreed to sit on this illustrious panel in celebration of our 5th Sweet Charity event. Let's gooooo! :-)
Chef Paul Smith
Welcome Chef Paul Smith to our 2019 panel of celebrity judges! A rock star among rock stars for area foodies, Chef Paul's name is associated with many of the area's most popular food-centric competitions and events. We are so lucky to have him join us on March 12th!
We are beyond thrilled to welcome WSAZ news anchor Amanda Barren to this year's panel of celebrity judges. She's a beloved figure in the region, welcomed into area living rooms night after night as she brings us the news of the day with compassion. We're so glad she'll be joining us on March 12th!
We're thrilled to welcome back Steven Keith, the WV Food Guy himself, to the Sweet Charity panel of celebrity judges! Steven is returning for his second turn at the judges' table, in large measure because he brings so much knowledge and experience to the equation. Welcome back, friend!
Meet Host/Emcee ... Adam Harris!
He is the host with the most, and we are thrilled that Adam Harris will be back to the mic for the 5th annual Sweet Charity dessert competition.
Adam is the Executive Producer of "Mountain Stage w/ Larry Groce," the long-running public radio program produced by WV Public Broadcasting and distributed by NPR Music.
Adam does a great job guiding us through this evening packed with good eats, good tunes, and fun! It wouldn't be Sweet Charity without him!
We are thrilled that Mr. Steve Himes will be joining us for his 5th consecutive year.
Whether performing by himself or with any conceivable combination of musicians, Steve Himes presents a unique style of playing which easily adapts to any situation. Such versatility has delighted audiences in clubs, theaters, restaurants and concerts for many years. We're lucky to have him provide the ear candy for our sweet event!
