One of the most unsung but meaningful programs we offer is Reassurance Calls. This program involves making a “phone friend” match with a volunteer for our care receivers who would appreciate a regular friendly check in from a friendly voice.
Missy is one of those friendly voices, and she is much loved by those she reaches out to.
“I knew about the good work Faith in Action had been doing,” said Missy. “When COVID-19 hit, I found myself with time and an opportunity to volunteer. Jennifer invited me to take part in their telephone outreach. It was the perfect fit.”
Missy enjoys the time she gets to spend with each of the care receivers she calls. “I generally try to call the same time each week, so it gives both of us something to look forward to, really,” she said. “It’s such a pleasure. I’ve 'met' a variety of people with interesting lives and histories. They’ve all got wonderful stories to tell.”
When asked to describe her favorite thing about this volunteer work, Missy said, “They let me into their lives, and we build a friendship over time. The connections we make are meaningful on both ends of the telephone line. What a lovely thing that is.”
